Our Story
Rooted in family. Growing with Purpose.

The Beginning
Great Buffalo Pecan Farm was born in 2001, when Dewey F. Bartlett Jr. purchased the land in Osage County, Oklahoma, with a dream: to create a farm that could be passed down from generation to generation. Having grown up working cattle, Dewey knew that hard work and patience are two of the many values best learned on a farm. That, and his passion for his home state, led him to establish an orchard full of Oklahoma's best-kept secret: pecan! When grown with the best of care and lots of hard work, the pecan tree takes about 8 years to produce it's first crop.
Years went by and Dewey's daughter Ann, a country girl at heart, fell madly in love with JP, who happened to also be a country boy at heart. Neither grew up on a farm, yet both knew that was where they wanted to end up. JP and Ann now live on the land and manage the farm with a shared passion for regenerative agriculture. They raise their 3 kids close to the land and focus on growing food that nourishes both the people it feeds and the soil it comes from.
🦬 Why “Great Buffalo”?
The land we farm in Osage County, Oklahoma, carries a deep and sacred history — one rooted in Native American heritage. When it came time to name our farm, Dewey felt strongly that it should honor the spirit of this place and the people who came before us.
He reached out to a local tribal elder, seeking guidance. The response was simple, but profound:
“The buffalo would be perfect.”
To many Native cultures, the buffalo is a sacred symbol of provision, strength, resilience, and renewal. It represents not just survival — but abundance, respect for the land, and the interconnectedness of all living things.
The name Great Buffalo is a way to carry that meaning forward: to remind us that farming is not just production — it's stewardship. It’s about giving back more than we take, honoring creation, and doing right by the soil, the trees, and the people we feed.
Growing a Family Farm
Over the years, we’ve planted, pruned, harvested, and hauled — all side by side. Our kids have grown up under the pecan trees, learning firsthand what it means to work with your hands, care for creation, and live a life deeply rooted in purpose.
We’ve never been a big operation. And that’s exactly how we like it.
Because it means every pecan that leaves our farm has been cared for — from soil to shell — by someone with a name, a story, and a heart in this work.
A Shift Toward Regeneration
In 2022, we began our transition to regenerative agriculture — not because it was trendy, but because it aligned with the values we were already living. As a family, we had started prioritizing health, vitality, and nutrition, and making intentional choices to reduce our exposure to chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
We asked ourselves: If we don’t want chemicals on the food we eat, why would we spray it on the food we grow?
So we dug in — literally. And what we found confirmed what we believed: health starts in the soil. Healthier soil led to stronger trees, more resilient harvests, and better food for our family — and yours.
Today, we’re committed to practices that build life below the surface. We plant cover crops, apply biological soil amendments, and are steadily working to eliminate synthetic inputs altogether. We’re also growing a herd of 100% grass-fed, grass-finished cattle, which we plan to integrate into our orchard in a way that mimics nature’s design, the buffalo, and further enhances soil fertility.
Partnerships That Keep Us Growing
We’re proud participants in the:
Pecan Strategy Research Project with the Noble Research Institute, and
Soil Health Initiative Program with the Oklahoma Conservation Commission
We’re also working with Advancing Eco Agriculture to use cutting-edge biological tools that support our trees from the roots up.
These partnerships help us continue to grow in knowledge, improve our practices, and steward our land more faithfully.
Why We Do This
We believe that how food is grown matters.
We believe that healthy soil grows healthy people.
We believe that small, family-owned farms can lead the way in producing food that’s not just good — but good for you, good for the earth, and good for generations to come.
We’re not perfect. But we are committed. And we’re honored to share our harvest with your family.
